10.26. Questions

 It's hard to predict many things around race day, today we are going down to Saint George. I am going to get my race package.

There is a practice swim in Sand Hollow Reservoir from 7:30 to 10 am, which I am going to go down for together with my mom and András, my race team. After that we are going down to Saint George. After getting my package, I'm going to try to find out the answer to some of my questions. I mean there are some of course that I don't dare to ask, haha:

1. Will I freeze on the startline? It's 6:52am and it's 6 Celsius degrees. - that sounds probably funny but it's not. It's a question others have asked in WC FB group, as well. Rightfully so. I just stepped outside this morning to check the weather and it's cold. Really.
I found the answer, there is a warming tent but will we all fit in it? On the map provided it looks tiny.

2. Is the lake still full of parasites that my friend Kate told me about? If so, and I haven't bought the cream yet, should I even go for it today? She told me you can start scrathing real bad if you don't use it. Something worth considering.

3. Road closures - where are they going to happen and for how long? Can we come down by car on race day to Saint George at least and then get the shuttle?

4. Still freaked out about drafting penalties. I mean of course I'll try to avoid that situation BUT how will I know what 6 bike lengths are on the spot or will I actually be able to get ahead anybody in 25 seconds? I mean I managed to avoid a penalty card or DQ in my last race in Lahti or in Alcatraz. But for instance, I did accidentally drop a gel when I got another one out and was afraid they would catch me for littering there. Of course they also said in Lahti that this would count as accidental and they count only intentional for penalty points. 

5. If there are no penalty tents on the run course and you do get penalized what will happen after you get marked? Where and when will you... or better asked can you serve your penalty?

6. What is accreditation?


I just did my first swim and I feel strong and confident it actually went better than I expected.

7. Where can we buy two additional opening banquet tickets, how much do they cost, are there any left?

To the finish line

 2 November So the thing is that I did it! I crossed the finish line, as a matter of fact. It was incredibly hard to understand what had just happened. We did not have a regular race, nor regular conditions that preceded it. And it was obvious from then on that it that whatever I hoped to achieve this race, was going to be close to impossible.  FINISH: Who - how - why not, if not? Ever since I completed this race... I have read various race recaps and heard various stories about it, be it the pros or the average athlete, like me, who managed to make it here.  Case studies: how come they did not finish? what if your bag does not make it?   There were some both among the women and men, who had accidents. Two men were hit on Saturday, 29 October by an intoxicated woman (drugged or drunken? investigation still ongoing). As a result, Mark (one of them) had two cervival, two lumbar vertebraes fractured, nose broken and road rash on one of his legs. I could not believe that...

Post World Championship, 31 October

 31 October, 2022 It's hard to gather my thoughts and write about them post race, a natural self-blaming process started that I could stop before it went too far. Luckily. Why did I blame myself?  Because I didn't bring more warm layers for those two hours we had to stand around in the cold weather. Why did I not bring some if I knew it was going to be cold? Two reasons: ONE I did not have too many warm layers since I was prepared for a weather of 28C/82F and had 2C/35F instead.  TWO I did have some more things I could have put on but I was afraid of them getting lost. Seriously looking back it's crazy, I have no idea why I thought so.  Why was that an issue? I think I was not in an ideal condition for the run. I was way too hungry despite eating a lot of food on the bike.  Otherwise I did everything I could do before the race. Except for one more thing. Getting enough sleep. According to Garmin I slept 5h52min but I remember getting up to listen to some meditat...
